When a patient of mine decides to stop taking testosterone, it is rarely because of side effects and almost always because it simply isn’t working for her. Unlike with estrogen, for which blood levels are rarely required, testosterone therapy requires being tested to make sure yours is in the right range. The risk of effects of testosterone gel in women who accidently touch the application site directly or through clothing are low. These effects include increased acne and unusual hair growth. If you’re a woman who lives with someone using testosterone gel, it’s important that you avoid all contact with the product. Tell your health care provider if you have an enlarged prostate, or BPH. Topical testosterone can worsen symptoms of BPH or may increase the risk of prostate cancer.

Other testosterone replacement products include Androderm, Axiron, Testim, and Fortesta. Tell your healthcare provider if you have any side effect that bothers you or that does not go away. Men with known or suspected prostate or breast cancer should not use testosterone gel 1.62% [see CONTRAINDICATIONS (4) and WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS (5.1)]. Used testosterone gel 1.62% pumps should be discarded in household trash in a manner that prevents accidental application or ingestion by children or pets. Patients could agree to continue in an open-label, active treatment maintenance period of the study for an additional 182 days. Geriatric patients treated with androgens may also be at risk for worsening of signs and symptoms of BPH.

Reduced fertility is observed in some men taking testosterone replacement therapy. Testicular atrophy, subfertility, and infertility have also been reported in men who abuse anabolic androgenic steroids [see DRUG ABUSE AND DEPENDENCE (9.2)]. With either type of use, the impact on fertility may be irreversible.

It comes in both 1% and 1.62% formulations via packets or a multi-dose pump. Testosterone pellets are very popular, and many women swear by them, but they are not recommended by most menopause experts. In general, women who use pellets initially love them because the huge bolus of estrogen and testosterone the pellets offer immediately makes them feel sexy, energetic, and fabulous overall. But these women often end up with unacceptably high levels because the dose is too high and the products aren’t regulated.

A common concern with testosterone gel is secondary transfer, which is when people other than the user come into contact with it, in particular women and children. Treatment of overdosage would consist of discontinuation of testosterone gel 1.62%, washing the application site with soap and water, and appropriate symptomatic and supportive care. Physical dependence is characterized by withdrawal symptoms after abrupt drug discontinuation or a significant dose reduction of a drug.

Increases in blood pressure may not be noticeable, but look out for and tell your health care provider right away if you have any of the following symptoms of severely high blood pressure. Androgel (testosterone gel) is a topical gel containing testosterone. It is administered through the skin for treatment of low testosterone levels. Androgel and other testosterone replacement products supplement or replace the natural production of testosterone and reverse symptoms of low testosterone levels.
